Marriage breakdowns: A disturbing trend

There were 500,000 divorce cases in Saudi Arabia in less than two decades, Asharq Al-Awsat, a sister publication of Arab News, reported Friday quoting a field study that claimed the figures represented a worrying trend.

The study, conducted by researcher Salman bin Muhammad Al-Amri, said divorces were particularly common among young couple and asked for establishing special offices for marriage counseling under the umbrella of Shariah courts.

A total of 250 young men and women are undergoing a five-week marriage-training program at Al-Mawada Center for Family Reconciliation and Guidance.

This is the first group of young couples to take this training course, the center said. Zuhair Nasir, secretary general of the center, said the program aims to introduce young couples to skills for happy marriages. This includes teaching couples how to get to know each other and communicate with each other and their families. Couples will also be given medical advice.

Some Saudi and Arab families are overly obsessed with the fear that someone will envy them or give them the evil eye. As a result, some people resort to extreme measures, such as living poorly or always pretending to be sick.
