New iftar record broken in Turkey

Tens of thousands of people ate Ramadan Iftar meals in Turkish capital of Ankara, breaking the world record for the largest number of people breaking fast together.

Attended by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, 70, 000-people Iftar meal became the biggest iftar event in Turkey so far.

The Iftar record was hold previously by Istanbul's Esenler municipality with 20 thousand people. Ankara's goal was 50,000 people.

Saudis in the Eastern Province are getting into the spirit of Ramadan by hosting massive iftar meals and feeding thousands of needy people in hospitality tents erected in Alkhobar.

“In these tents nearly 5,000 people break their fasts every evening. We call it the Ramadan Multicultural Gathering,” said Tariq Al-Sugair, one of the volunteer organizers at the Alkhobar Cooperative Office for Call and Guidance.

A Ramadan tent set up alongside the Zafer Mosque in the Russian capital of Moscow will begin operations on Friday with an inaugural Turkish Day celebration.

The tent was set up for the first time back in 2006 by the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality, and in time has grown and set an example for similar setups in other parts of Russia.

The tent serves fast-breaking iftar meals during the Muslim holy month of fasting, Ramadan.

More than 41 thousand people gathered in a fast-breaking dinner hosted by Istanbul's Esenler Municipality in 7,020 tables measuring 10 kilometres.

Guinness officials were also in attendance at the event in which 41,120 people sat at 7,020 tables set in the longest avenue of the district.

Professor Orhan Kural, representative of the Guinness Book of Records in Turkey, said that a 50-member team of Guinness recorded the dinner. The records will be sent to the United Kingdom.

Iftar at Madinah mosque costs $670,000 a day

The cost of feeding a million worshippers at the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah amounts to $670,000 every day, a local newspaper has reported.

The Saudi Gazette reported the cost of each meal – which includes yoghurt, dates, dugga and Saudi coffee – amounts to at least SR2.5 per person ($0.66). The tradition differs from that of the Grand Mosque in Makkah, where only dates and Saudi coffee are allowed.
