Ramadan fasting begins

(IslamDag) - Dagestan will start the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan on Monday along with most other Gulf states, Dagestani Mufti Ahmad Haji Abdulaev said on Saturday.

"I ask Allah to give us the opportunity, strength and health to perform our best worship for Him in this holy month, so that we can commit more good deeds" - he said on nationwide TV address.

Russian TV channels should broadcast less news about terrorism and extremism, the chief mufti of Russia, Talgat Tadzhuddin, said on Tuesday at a meeting with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

"Once an explosion occurs somewhere, it is discussed every hour for at least two days," Tadzhuddin said. He suggested instead that media outlets pay more attention to "the lifestyle of the Russian peoples, their traditions and beliefs."

Russia's Muslim Chechnya to ban energy drinks

Russia's Muslim Chechnya region is planning to ban the sale of non-alcoholic energy drinks such as Red Bull to under 18s, saying they are un-Islamic and dangerous, health officials said on Monday.

The ban would be the latest restriction from authorities in Chechnya, where shops can only sell alcohol during a small morning time frame, eateries are shut during the Ramadan fasting month and women must wear headscarves in state buildings.

Russia's supreme mufti stands for introduction of Muslim education system

Supreme Mufti of Russia Talgat Tadzhutddin has proposed that three-stage system of Muslim education is established in Russia, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported on Saturday.

"Currently, Russia is dependant on the foreign Islamic universities," Tadzhutddin said at a meeting with Grigory Rapota, the special representative of the Russian president in the Volga Federal District.

Russia hails Muslims on fighting extremism

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has praised Muslim efforts in fighting extremism, appealing for scholars' help in integrating new immigrants into the society.

"We will fight terror consistently and without compromise," Medvedev said during a meeting with Muslim leaders, Interfax news agency reported.

"Muslim organizations are in the vanguard, and your struggle for the purity of faith requires great personal courage."

Medvedev praised efforts of Muslim scholars in highlighting the peaceful teachings of Islam.

Muslims in Russia ask for increased Haj quota

Muslim leaders in Russia asked President Dmitry Medvedev on Tuesday to press Saudi Arabia to increase the number of worshippers allowed to perform the annual Haj pilgrimage.

Almost three million Muslims flock to Mecca every year for Haj, a duty every able-bodied Muslim who can afford it must perform at least once in their lifetime. Riyadh allocates quotas for Muslims around the world.
