The date fruit and tree were dear to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the word “date” is mentioned in the Holy Qur’an more than 20 times.
While the date palm tree is called “nakhl,” the fruit is called “tamr” in Arabic.
The date palm, mentioned more than any other fruit-bearing plant in the Qur’an, is a symbol often associated with Islam and Muslims. Throughout the month of Ramadan, dates are a common ingredient in the Muslim diet.

The Saudi Kingdom donated 150 metric tons of dates to Sri Lanka last week for distribution at mosques during the coming holy month of Ramadan.
Ministry of Finance official Mansour Al-Yousef handed the consignment at a simple ceremony at the Saudi Embassy in Colombo on Friday to Abdul Hameed Mohammed Fowzie, Sri Lankan senior minister for urban affairs, in the presence of Farouk Mohamed Wazeer Ali, charge d’affaires of the mission.
2,000kg of dates sent for Filipino Muslims

For the second time this year, the Maranao Muslim Community (MARCOM) has sent some 2,000 kilogrammes of dates for the Filipino Muslims in Mindanao for the holy month of Ramadan.
Dates are precious to Muslims in the Philippines, who have not received such kind of gifts during Ramadan from any Islamic country except from the UAE, said Ibrahim Marohumbsar, chairman of the Maranao Muslim Community in Dubai.
