Malaysia’s ‘obedient wives’ anger rights groups

A Malaysian group urging wives to avoid marital problems by fulfilling their husbands’ desires has angered politicians and women’s rights groups, the New Straits Times reported on Sunday.

The Obedient Wives Club, which was set up by a group of Muslim women, said domestic violence, infidelity and prostitution stemmed from a lack of belief in God and a failure of women to satisfy their husbands.

Around Sept. 11, 2001, not long after she founded the Islamic Speakers Bureau of Atlanta, Soumaya Khalifa heard from a group whose name sounded like “Bakers Club.” It wanted a presentation.

The address was unfamiliar, but she went anyway. The group turned out to be the Bickerers Club, whose members love to argue. Islam was their topic du jour and their venue was a tavern. Ms. Khalifa laughed, and made the best of it.

Parents may soon be able to find out if their unborn child is prone to any inherited diseases, researchers said on Thursday, after developing a non-invasive technique to draw the entire gene map of the human foetus.

By analysing a sample of the mother's blood, which contains DNA from the foetus, scientists in Hong Kong and the United States were able to identify all the DNA strands that belong to the child and piece them together.

Although there are many reasons for divorce among Arab couples, different levels of education tend to be the main reason why many part ways, say experts.

A marriage between a husband not as educated as his wife is more likely to end in divorce, they add.

They claim women also find it difficult to marry men not as educated as them for social, psychological and economic reasons.
