The world economy would bear substantial costs if the United States took steps to significantly escalate the conflict with Iran over its controversial nuclear programme, according to the findings of a Federation of American Scientists’ (FAS) special report released here Friday.

Discriminatory implementation of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) has left many countries feeling that being a party to the anti-atom bomb pact hinders cooperation in the field atomic energy, Iran's U.N. ambassador said on Monday.
Speaking at a meeting of the U.N. General Assembly on the annual report of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Iranian Ambassador Mohammad Khazaee sought to assure countries that despite Tehran's reservations about the way the treaty is enforced, Iran does not plan to pull out.

Israel’s prime minister and defense minister ordered the military to go on alert to prepare to attack Iran’s nuclear program two years ago, but backed off following opposition from top security officials, an Israeli news show claims in a report to be aired Monday night.
A pre-broadcast news release from Channel 2’s Uvda (Fact) show did not say whether a final decision to attack was made.

Iran followed the United States yesterday in denying that the two countries had scheduled direct bilateral negotiations on Iran’s controversial nuclear program.
The New York Times, quoting unnamed US administration officials, had said on Saturday that secret exchanges between US and Iranian officials had yielded agreement “in principle” to hold one-on-one talks.

The US and Israel are embarking on the largest exercise in their long military relationship, against a backdrop of tension with Iran and sharp rhetoric in the American presidential election.
An air defense drill planned for late this month will involve more than 3,500 Americans and 1,000 Israelis, practicing their ability to work together against a range of threats facing the main US ally in the Mideast. Officials briefing reporters on Wednesday would not specify the exact date for security reasons.

Iran yesterday vowed to “retaliate” against any attack after Israel’s prime minister called for a “red line” to prevent the Islamic republic from acquiring a nuclear bomb.
Denying any nuclear military program, Iran’s deputy UN ambassador said his country “is strong enough to defend itself and reserves its full right to retaliate with full force against any attack.”

Iran warned Israel and the United States against any aggression, as it proudly paraded its troops and military hardware yesterday under the gaze of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and top brass.
The Tehran parade, involving thousands of military personnel, dozens of tanks and missiles borne on trucks, marked the anniversary of the start of the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war.
