Ramadan special: British Channel 4 to 'provoke' viewers with Muslim 'adhan'

A popular British television channel says it hopes to provoke viewers by broadcasting the Muslim call to prayer during Ramadan, in what is said to be a first for a mainstream UK station.
Channel 4 says it will broadcast the call, known as the “adhan” in Arabic, during the 30 days of the holy month of fasting, which starts next week.

Syria opposition coalition names London ‘ambassador’

Syria’s opposition coalition on Monday named a human rights activist as its “ambassador” in London, it said in a statement posted online, the second such appointment by the newly formed coalition.
“The coalition of the opposition announces the nomination of the president of the Syrian Commission for Human Rights, Walid Safur, as ambassador to London. He is the second ambassador of the Syrian revolution,” the National Coalition said on its Facebook page.

Britain welcomed the new Syrian opposition to London on Friday but said it needed to know more about their plans before joining France in recognizing them as the main voice against Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
Foreign Secretary William Hague said the opposition had taken a “very big step forward” by uniting and said Britain would decide “in the coming days” whether to recognize it as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people.

France is in talks with the United States and Britain on a possible release of strategic oil stocks to push fuel prices lower, French ministers said on Wednesday, four weeks before the country's presidential election.
