No difference between Israel prisons and Guantanamo, says ex-prisoner

Harun Mansur Nasruddin, a Palestinian ex-prisoner who was freed as part of the prisoner swap deal between Hamas and Israel, has said that there was no difference between Israel prisons and Abu Gharib or prisons in Guantanamo.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency correspondent on Tuesday, Nusruddin who was sent to Turkey after freed by Israel, said that it was extremely hard being kept as prisoner in his country by another state.

Former hunger-striker Mahmoud al-Sarsak arrived on Tuesday in the Gaza Strip after being released from Israeli custody.

Relatives gathered at the Palestinian side of the Israeli Erez crossing in northern Gaza to welcome the freed prisoner, who refused food in Israeli jail for over 90 days to protest his imprisonment without charge.

An Israeli air strike on Gaza killed one Palestinian and wounded two on Saturday, medics said, in a blow to Egyptian-brokered efforts to restore an informal truce.

There was no immediate confirmation from the Israeli military of the latest raid which followed several on the territory during the night that drew retaliatory rocket fire into Israel.

The casualties came in a strike east of the city of Khan Yunis, in the south of the Gaza Strip, Palestinian sources said.

Israeli settlers suspected in West Bank mosque arson attack

A mosque in the village of Jaba in the occupied West Bank was vandalized and set on fire early on Tuesday, in an attack Palestinians blamed on Israeli settlers.

Scrawled on the outside walls in Hebrew were the words “Ulpana War,” referring to the Ulpana hill in a West Bank settlement where the Israeli government is preparing to remove five disputed apartment buildings.

Around three meters of the mosque’s interior wall and carpeting were scorched.

Israeli jailed soldier joins Palestinian hunger strikers

An Israeli soldier, jailed for refusing to perform mandatory reserve service, went on a hunger strike on Sunday, joining the Palestinian prisoners in the Jewish country fasting to protest their detaining conditions.

Yaniv Mazor, a 31-year-old Israeli, was sentenced to imprisonment last week after deciding not to continue the mandatory reserve service in protest against Israel's occupation of the Palestinian territories.

Israeli settlers filmed firing guns at Palestinians

A video released by an Israeli human rights group appears to show settlers shooting at a group of Palestinian protesters while police and soldiers stand by.

The incident was filmed by Palestinians from the West Bank village of Asira al-Qibliya on Saturday afternoon. A 24-year-old Palestinian, Fathi Asayira, was taken to hospital with facial injuries following the shooting.

Thousands of Palestinians Mark 'Day of Catastrophe', Hunger Strike Victory

Israeli forces faced off with Palestinian stone-throwers in the West Bank on Tuesday during the annual Nakba Day protests over the "catastrophe" that befell the Palestinians in 1948.

At Beitunia checkpoint near Ramallah, youths hurled stones at troops, who fired tear gas, metal pellets and rubber bullets in a bid to break up the demonstration, an AFP correspondent said.

Many protesters could be seen with blood on their faces as they waved black flags and roared angry slogans.

Egypt brokers Palestinian hunger strike deal

Egypt has brokered a deal aimed at ending a hunger strike by 1,600 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails, a Palestinian source close to the negotiations said on Monday.

One in three of the 4,800 Palestinians serving time in Israeli jails began refusing food on April 17 in protest against detention without trial and to demand better conditions like an increase in family visits and ending solitary confinement.
