Al-Azhar demands global ban on attacks on Islam

Egypt’s top Muslim cleric yesterday called for an international ban on all forms of attacks against Islam, after a provocative film sparked violent protests in the Middle East and North Africa.
Sheikh Ahmed Al-Tayyeb, grand imam of Cairo’s Al-Azhar, the highest seat of Islamic learning, underlined “the need for an international resolution (banning) any attack on Muslim religious symbols,” in a statement addressed to UN leader Ban Ki-moon and published by official news agency MENA.

Al-Azhar mufti demands withdrawal of Arab Peace Initiative

The Mufti of Al-Azhar University in Cairo has urged the leaders of the 57 Muslim-majority states meeting in Makkah to withdraw the Arab Peace Initiative in response to the latest Israeli aggression against Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque, reported on Memo news.
Mufti Ahmed Al-Tayyeb pointed out that "the pivotal issue of Palestine is known to be the origin of all problems" in the region.
Azhar imam urges Libyans to disobey Gaddafi

The Grand Imam of al-Azhar, the world’s leading institution of Sunni Islam, issued a statement Saturday calling upon all Libyans to disobey their leader Muammar Gaddafi.
Sheikh Mohamed al-Tayeb condemned in a strongly-worded statement the extreme violence with which Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has been dealing with his people since the protests that demand the ouster of his regime started on February 17.
Egypt Islamic authority halts dialogue with Vatican

Egypt’s highest Islamic authority, Al-Azhar, said on Thursday it was freezing all dialogue with the Roman Catholic Church over what it called Pope Benedict’s repeated insults toward Islam.
Benedict this month condemned attacks on churches that killed dozens of people in Egypt, Iraq and Nigeria, saying they showed the need to adopt effective measures to protect religious minorities.
