Differences on the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan are forcing Muslim minorities across Europe to turn to modern astronomy to help determine the first day of the fasting month.

"In the modern world, especially in the West, people can't decide on the fly to start or end the holy month at 10 p.m. the night before," Nidhal Guessoum, an Algerian-born astrophysicist, told Reuters.

Minister of Haj Bandar Hajjar said that the ministry has completed all preparations to welcome the fasting month of Ramadan. He said arrangements are in full swing to cope with the huge influx of pilgrims from all over the world during the upcoming peak Umrah season in Ramadan.

The minister also announced that amended draft of the new Umrah law would be unveiled in the near future, Al-Watan newspaper reported.

The month of fasting this year will begin on July 20 and the celebration of Eid Al-Fitr will be on Aug. 19, according to a senior Islamic scholar in the Kingdom.

Member of the Council of Senior Scholars Sheikh Abdullah Al-Manie said fasting will end on Saturday Aug. 18.

The days related to religious occasions and rites will have to be confirmed by the sighting of the new moon and royal orders.

Al-Manie added the Day of Arafat will be on Thursday Oct. 25 and the next Hijra year of 1434 will start on Nov. 15.

As preparations are in full swing for this year’s Olympic Games in London, Muslims athletes face a major challenge as the event coincides with the holy fasting month of Ramadan.

“It will be my first time to compete in Ramadan,” Emarati swimmer Obaid Al Jasimi told Arabian Business on Wednesday, January 11.

“So I thought I would [speak to] some religious people about that before I do it and will see what they tell me.”

Ramadan, the holiest month in Islamic calendar, is expected to start in July through August.

Muslims around the world are celebrating Eid al-Fitr, a three-day holiday that marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

Observers of Islam in Egypt, Syria and several other Arab countries started marking the holiday Tuesday by crowding into mosques for prayers. Muslims in several non-Arab countries, including Russia and Turkey, also began Eid celebrations Tuesday.

Chinese Muslims gather in the Great Mosque of Guangzhou for fast-breaking dinner every evening.

Hundreds of Muslims from several nations have their fast-breaking dinner at the Great Mosque of Guangzhou, known also as Huaisheng Mosque (Memorial of the Holy Prophet).

Rebuilt many times over its history, Huaisheng Mosque is traditionally thought to have been originally built over 1,300 years ago, which would make it one of the oldest mosques in the world. It was named in memory of Prophet Muhammad.

A study by the Ecofin Institute regarding the consumption patterns of the Muslim population living in France shows that during the month of Ramadan, Muslim spending generated a turnover of nearly 400 million euros.

As elsewhere in the world, the month of Ramadan is greeted by a large increase in consumption, primarily of food. This is confirmed by the investigation of "Ecofin" which states that "the purchases made by young Muslims were double compared to other months of the year."

Vienna Mayor Michael Haeupl hosted a fast-breaking dinner for representatives of Muslim community in Austria on Tuesday.

250 people including Turks attended the fast-breaking dinner at Vienna City Hall (Rathaus).

Delivering a speech at the dinner, Haeupl said that they had been hosting traditional fast-breaking dinner for 10 years.

Many people of foreign origin were living in Austria and it was important to live in peace in that beautiful city, he said.
