NATO airstrikes targeted the center of Muammar Qaddafi’s seat of power early Monday, unleashing guided bombs that destroyed a multistory library and office in his compound and badly damaged a reception hall for visiting dignitaries.

With the Libyan rebels rejecting an African Union peace plan, there seems to be no end in sight for the conflict. The opposition is still relying on coalition forces to help its cause, but it seems they could prove more of a hindrance.

­It has been claimed the allies have used depleted uranium in their attacks – a substance which causes cancer and mutations in those affected.

Anti-government fighters claimed NATO airstrikes blasted their forces Thursday in another apparent mistake that sharply escalated anger about the military alliance's efforts to cripple Libyan forces. At least five fighters were killed and more than 20 injured, a doctor said.

The attack — near the front lines outside the eastern oil port of Brega — would be the second accidental NATO strike against anti-government forces in less than a week.

Muammar Qaddafi’s forces attacked two west Libyan towns, killing dozens while rebels were pinned down in the east and NATO tried to resolve a heated row over who should lead the Western air campaign.

The US military warned Tuesday it was “considering all options” in response to dire conditions there that have left people cowering in darkened homes and scrounging for food and rainwater.

Russia pledged on Wednesday to boost cooperation with NATO in Afghanistan and consider a joint missile defense shield, offering signs of better ties with its Cold War foes during a visit by the alliance’s chief.

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen met President Dmitry Medvedev at the Kremlin to iron out a new bilateral agreement to be signed at a summit of the 28-nation alliance in Lisbon on Nov. 19-20.

Russia is demanding that a new cooperation agreement with NATO limit the number of troops that can be based in new member states in Central Europe, a leading Russian newspaper reported Wednesday.

Russia and the alliance appear to be courting more constructive ties after years of acrimony over US missiles in Europe, the possible expansion of NATO toward Russian borders, and the 2008 Russia-Georgia war.
