Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said Israel and its former ally Turkey must repair their relationship because of the instability in their region.

Turkey cut its once extensive ties with Israel after Israeli marines killed nine Turkish activists in May 2010 on international aid vessel trying to break Israel's siege of the Gaza Strip.

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) yesterday denounced an Israeli claim that Al-Aqsa Mosque is part of Israeli territory.

OIC Secretary-General Professor Ekmeledin Ihsanoglu said: “The Islamic nation will not accept any move by Israel to encroach on Al-Aqsa, the third holiest mosque for Muslims.”

He called on ambassadors of Muslim countries, who are members of UNESCO, to act immediately to stop Israeli aggression on religious and heritage sites in occupied Jerusalem.

“We accuse Israel of killing Yasser Arafat by poisoning him with that lethal substance,” Nasser Al-Kidwa told AFP, referring to polonium, traces of which were recently found on clothing worn by Arafat when he was ailing.

A deputy chief of staff of the Iranian Armed Forces reiterated the country's capability to repel threats, and warned Israel that any military aggression against Iran would lead to an immediate end of the Zionist regime.

"The Islamic Revolution enjoys high capability, and if the Zionist regime wants to take an action against us, it will cause its imminent end," Major General Mostafa Izadi told FNA on Saturday.

The General further ensured that Israel lacks the courage and ability to harm Iran.

Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Israel on Monday for talks with Israeli and Palestinian leaders against the backdrop of sustained violence in Syria and concern on Iran’s nuclear program.

Putin arrived around midday (0900 GMT) for a first stop in the northern Israeli town of Netanya, where he was to participate in the unveiling of a memorial honoring the role of the Red Army in World War II.

Later on Monday, he was to hold talks with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Shimon Peres.

An Israeli soldier, jailed for refusing to perform mandatory reserve service, went on a hunger strike on Sunday, joining the Palestinian prisoners in the Jewish country fasting to protest their detaining conditions.

Yaniv Mazor, a 31-year-old Israeli, was sentenced to imprisonment last week after deciding not to continue the mandatory reserve service in protest against Israel's occupation of the Palestinian territories.
