Pressure mounts on Israel to reverse on settlement activity

Australia on Tuesday became the latest country to summon its Israeli ambassador to convey concerns over plans to build new settlements in east Jerusalem and the West Bank.
Australia joined Britain and France in opposing Israeli settlement activity.
Foreign Minister Bob Carr said the Israeli proposal, and plans to withhold tax revenue from the Palestinian Authority, “enormously complicate the prospects for resuming negotiations between the two sides.”
“Australia has long opposed all settlement activity,” he added.

A US announcement that a conference on a Middle East free of nuclear weapons cannot be held as foreseen is a "serious setback," Iran said Monday, accusing Washington of protecting Israel.
"The US cannot unilaterally decide for the sake of Israel to announce that the conference cannot be held. This is a very serious setback for the non-proliferation regime," Iran's ambassador to the UN atomic agency said.

Talks planned for next month on banning nuclear weapons in the Middle East will not take place, the United States said on Saturday, a development likely to anger Arab states but please Israel.
The State Department announced that the mid-December conference on creating a zone free of weapons of mass destruction, or WMD, would not occur and did not make clear when, or whether, it would take place.
Earlier this month, diplomats told Reuters that the talks were likely to be postponed, rather than canceled outright.
