The Pentagon is appealing to Florida pastor Terry Jones against repeating last year's burning of the Qur'ran and images of Muhammad that led to widespread rioting and deaths round the world.

US officials are monitoring the situation and the military is fearful for the lives of American soldiers in Afghanistan and elsewhere if Jones goes ahead with his plan, announced on his website, to set fire to the Qur'an next week.

The 57-member Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) yesterday announced its plan to establish a satellite channel and promote investment in the media to fight Islamophobia and enhance exchange of information among the member states.

“We have a number of important proposals to strengthen Islamic media activities. They including the launch of an OIC satellite channel,” OIC Secretary-General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu told a conference of information ministers from the Islamic world.

The Norwegian far-right militant who killed 77 people said at his trial on Tuesday his shooting spree and bomb attack were "sophisticated and spectacular" and that he would do the same thing again.

Anders Behring Breivik, 33, has pleaded not guilty and said he was defending his country by setting off a car bomb that killed eight people at government headquarters in Oslo last July, then killing another 69 people in a shooting spree at a youth summer camp organised by the ruling Labour Party.

Concerns over Islamic fundamentalism reached a peak in recent weeks when French police launched the latest of a series of raids on suspected Islamic militants, detaining 10 people across the country in predawn arrests.

Right-wing extremists from a number of European countries came together in Denmark on Saturday to stage a protest against what they call the "Islamification of Europe."

The protest broke out in the port city of Aarhus, and brought together hundreds of people from the United Kingdom, France, Poland, Eastern Europe, Germany and the Scandinavian countries. The protest was organized by the Denmark Defense League in cooperation with the English Defense League.

Training materials used by the FBI for dealing with American Muslims and other Islamic communities have advised agents they can break the law and impinge on some of their targets' civil rights.

The instructions were contained in confidential materials reviewed by the Senate Judiciary Committee as part of an internal FBI probe into what sort of training agents were exposed to when dealing with Islam.

An increase in hate-induced violence against Muslims and Jews during the past year in the province of Manitoba and its capitol Winnipeg have brought the two faiths together to confront it.

In one of the many incidents, a young hijab-wearing woman driving a car is persistently stalked through traffic by a man making shooting gestures at her. In another, a girl's hair is set on fire at school by a boy making a slur against Jews.

Now Jews and Muslims in the Canadian province of Manitoba are getting together to stand up to the hate.

Norway's police apologised on Thursday for not acting faster to stop the massacre of 69 people at a Labour Party youth camp last summer by a gunman who had earlier set off a bomb in central Oslothat killed eight.

The violence, Norway's worst since World War Two, profoundly shocked the nation of 4.8 million and victims' families have strongly criticised the police for their slow response.

They have complained that too many police officers were on holiday and that no helicopter was ready to dispatch.

Turkey's prime minister said on Tuesday that inciting xenophobia, particularly Islamophobia, in order to win elections was so irresponsible.

Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan said it would be a historic mistake for Europe, which had paid heavy prices due to fascism, to remain silent to the new and emerging fascism wave.

"French President Nicolas Sarkozy is inciting discrimination and xenophobia before presidential elections in the country," Erdogan told a gathering of his Justice & Development (AK) Party in Ankara.

A mosque near Brussels was the target Monday evening of an arson attack in which the imam died, Belgian authorities said late Monday.

One man was arrested — a Muslim who said he was born in 1978 — in the attack on the mosque in Anderlecht, a suburb of Brussels, the Belgian capital, said Jean-Marc Meilleur, a spokesman for the Brussels Prosecutor’s Office.
