A Roman Catholic-run school in the southern Philippines has caused controversy by banning Muslim students from wearing the hijab headscarf.
Mehol Sadain, who heads the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos, said Sunday he had written to Pilar College in the mixed Muslim-Christian port city of Zamboanga to demand it reverse its policy.
While the school was right to claim it could exercise academic freedom, Sadain said it should do so with “justice and fair play.”
China bans Uighur Muslims from Ramadan fasting

China banned Muslim officials and students from fasting during Ramadan in Uighur region.
Guidance posted on numerous government websites called on Communist Party leaders to restrict Muslim religious activities during the holy month, including fasting and visiting mosques.
The government has banned any public religious activities by the region's Muslims, according to a spokesman for the Munich-based World Uighur Congress.
US Navy to stop using 'Muslim woman' as target for practice

The US Navy will no longer use a target of a Muslim woman brandishing a gun at a SEAL training range after the image was met with harsh criticism.
The cardboard target depicts a woman wearing a hijab while standing in front of a verse from the Quran and aiming a gun (pic).
It was used at a new training range for SEALs in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
But the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) asked the Pentagon to remove it after a picture of the controversial target was published by the Virginian-Pilot last Tuesday.

A presentation on Islam allegedly made to members of the US Army included some blasphemous comments and distorted facts about Islam.
The 13-page presentation was prepared by Michael Margulies, an expert on Arabic language and literature, and was posted on the “Public Intelligence” website.
The presentation, titled “Muslim Morality and Jihadi ethics,” includes a so-called photo of the Prophet Muhammad in addition to general information on the Muslim holy book, the Quran.
Muslim mother banned from British school over face veil

A British Muslim woman was turned away from a parent’s night at her son’s college because she refused to remove her full face veil.
Maroon Rafique, had been invited to attend the parents evening but said she was apprehended by security staff when she entered the Manchester College.
She was told that for the security of the teachers and the children at the college there was a ban on any type of face covering. Rafique was also warned that if she did not remove her face veil (niqab) she would not be allowed onto the campus.
House Search Adds to China Muslim Plight

China has launched a new campaign to search houses of Uighur Muslims in the north-western Xinjiang province, a move as a new sign of religious and cultural repression of the sizable minority.
"According to arrangements made by relevant departments at higher levels, our joint residential police bureaus will be inspecting all buildings in residential and family compounds," said a police notice posted in Hetian's Gujiangbage quarter cited by Agence France-Presse (AFP).
