Insults to the Islamic prophet Muhammad are part of an organized assault on Muslim religious and cultural values and cannot be brushed aside, Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi said Wednesday, rejecting the case for free speech made by President Obama just a day earlier.

The world's largest Islamic body called on Tuesday for expressions of Islamophobia to be curbed by law, just as some countries restrict anti-Semitic speech or Holocaust denial.

Pakistan, speaking on behalf of the 56 countries that form the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), condemned a video made in the United States that defamed Islam and the Prophet Mohammad, igniting Muslim protests around the world this month.

As an American Muslim activist, I receive this question all too often: “America is about freedom, free speech, and democracy—why do Muslims hate us?” The question is not at all why they hate us, but why don’t we get it.

Many of age Americans remember Sept. 11, 2001—a day we justly cried out for freedom, free speech, and democracy. Fewer, however, remember Sept. 11, 1973 when America backed dictator Augusto Pinochet’s forces to overthrow and kill Chile’s democratically elected President Salvador Allende.

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation has warned that cartoons denigrating Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) published in France could trigger a new wave of anti-Western violence but urged Muslims all over the world to show restraint.

In a statement, OIC Secretary-General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu "expressed shock and dismay over" the depictions and warned they would "further exacerbate the ongoing turmoil and violence created by the release of the anti-Islam film (Innocence of Muslims)."

Amid fury over a US-made film defaming Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon him), Muslim leaders in Malaysia called on Monday, September 17, for a mass prayer to show unity and seek the well-being of Muslims around the world.

“As Muslims, we must show our strength and unity in facing this issue together through prayer, which is described as the weapon of the believer,” The Malaysia International Institute of Islamic Cooperation (IKIAM) said in a statement cited by Bernama news agency.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has stated that Turkey recognizes anti-semitism as a crime, while not a single Western country recognizes Islamophobia as such Today`s Zaman reported.

Speaking to journalists in Sarajevo after a series of visits to Azerbaijan, Ukraine and Bosnia and Herzegovina, Erdogan commented on the 14-minute trailer for "Innocence of Muslims," an obscure film that mocks the Prophet Muhammad, which sparked violent riots across various Muslim nations.

U.S Justice Department continues to criminalize what is clearly protected political speech by prosecuting numerous Muslims for disseminating political views the government dislikes or considers threatening.

The latest episode emerged on Friday, when the FBI announced the arrest and indictment of Jubair Ahmad, a 24-year-old Pakistani legal resident living in Virginia, charged with “providing material support” to a designated Terrorist organization (Lashkar-e-Tayyiba (LeT)).
