Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, along with fellow Islamist movements, called for mass rallies on Saturday to support President Mohammed Mursi, a day after thousands of the president’s opponents protested in several governorates to denounce the latest constitutional declaration.

Tens of thousands of protesters gathered in Cairo on Friday to pile pressure on Mursi after a panel dominated by fellow Islamists rushed through a controversial draft constitution.

Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi triggered controversy on Thursday by issuing a decree likely to lead to retrials of Hosni Mubarak and his aides but which was compared to the ousted leader's autocratic ways.

As well as ordering retrials for Mubarak-era officials responsible for violence during the uprising against his rule, the decree shielded from legal challenge an Islamist-dominated assembly writing Egypt's new constitution.

Egypt has reached a preliminary agreement with a team from the International Monetary Fund for a $4.8 billion loan, a minister said on Tuesday.

The deal is seen as a vital step for shoring up Egypt’s battered finances and rebuilding the confidence of investors, who have been looking to the IMF to give its seal of approval to the government’s economic program.

The Obama administration struggled Thursday to deal with the biggest flare-up in Israeli-Palestinian violence in years, unable to call on its old ally, former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, to negotiate an end to rocket attacks on the Jewish state.

Instead, the administration relied on Egypt’s untested Islamist President Mohammed Mursi, who - like the Gaza Strip’s rulers, Hamas - is a member of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Egypt’s Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr called on the United States to “immediately intervene” to end “Israeli aggression on Gaza, Reuters reported Thursday.

Amr “requested that the United States immediately intervene to stop Israeli aggression on the Palestinian people in Gaza,” MENA news agency reported, adding that Amr spoke to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton by telephone.

The United States said Wednesday it supported Israel’s right to self-defense and condemned militant rocket attacks on southern Israel.

Internal feuds are threatening to unravel the political party of Egypt’s ultraconservative Islamist Salafis, as pragmatists try to shake off the control of hardline clerics who reject any compromise in their stark, puritanical version of Islam.

The fight for leadership could paralyze the Al-Nour Party, which rocketed out of nowhere to become Egypt’s second most powerful political force, behind the Muslim Brotherhood. Together, the Brotherhood and Al-Nour embodied the rise of Islamists to prominence after last year’s fall of Hosni Mubarak.

Egypt sees no reason to make changes to its peace treaty with Israel, presidential spokesman Yasser Ali said in statements carried Thursday by the state-owned paper Al-Ahram.

"There is no need for the moment to amend the Camp David agreement," said Ali who was accompanying President Mohamed Morsi in New York for the meetings of the UN General Assembly.

In 1979, Egypt became the first Arab country to sign a peace deal with Israel.

Egypt President Muhammad Mursi has urged the US to change its approach to the Arab world to be able to repair relations and revitalize an alliance with Egypt.

In a media interview ahead of his visit to New York to take part in a meeting of the UN General Assembly, he said the US should not expect Egypt to live by its rules as the West, underscoring a cultural divide between the two nations.
