At least 54 people were killed when a jet fighter blew up a fuel station amid heavy fighting between government and rebel forces in northern Syria on Thursday, a British-based monitoring group said.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which has a network of activists across Syria reporting on government violence during the 18-month-old revolt, cited an activist in Al-Raqqa province as saying more than 110 people were dead or wounded.

Syrian troops shelled several districts in Aleppo and clashed with rebels yesterday, as international peace envoy for Syria said he hoped for peace in Syria and an early return home for Syrian refugees.
The UN/Arab league envoy Lakhdar Brahimi yesterday met representatives of 1,300 Syrians at Altinozu camp in Hatay city, located on the border with their violence-racked homeland, in his first encounter since taking over the mission from his frustrated predecessor.

Syrian expats say their relatives are attempting to resume their lives as the Free Syrian Army and Basher Assad’s Syrian Arabic Army leave their cities, towns and villages to fight for control in other parts of the country.
An estimated 100,000 Syrians fled their country in August for Turkey and Jordan. But many say they are prepared to return to their homes to pickup up their shattered lives.

Syria's former prime minister, Riyad Hijab, has claimed Bashar al-Asssad's regime is on the point of collapse, having lost control of two-thirds of the country, as he called on other top officials to follow his example and defect.
In his first public appearance since he fled Damascus with his family a week ago, Hijab told a press conference in the Jordanian capital, Amman, the Syrian army needed to "take the side of the people".

Syrian tanks stormed an opposition-held district of Aleppo yesterday, sparking fierce clashes that a security official said marked the start of a long-threatened ground assault on the key battleground city.
The assault on the country’s commercial capital came as Amnesty International raised concerns about the plight of civilians in the city and warned both sides they would be held accountable for any attacks on civilians.
“The assault has genuinely begun,” the security official in Damascus told AFP.

Smoking a cigarette outside a Turkish hospital near the Syrian border, a man in a gray gown and flip-flops held his sleeping 2-year-old daughter, Aya. On Aya’s right eye was a bandage. In her left hand was a chocolate bar.
Aya lost her eye when she was struck by shrapnel from a shell that also killed her 8-month-old brother, Mohammad, and their mother. The father and daughter were among some 200,000 people who the UN said late Sunday have fled Syria’s largest city, Aleppo, during days of clashes between rebels and the military.

The rebels, who are in control large parts of Syria's second city, have set up checkpoints and sniper positions.
Activists say columns of government troops and tanks are heading towards the city from other areas.
Aleppo is the country's commercial capital, and is key to the battle to control the north of the country.
Street battles have been reported throughout Aleppo for almost a week, as rebels try to hold on to seized neighbourhoods.
