Russia says Saudi Arabia and some other Persian Gulf Arab states are supporting "international terrorists and extremists" fighting against the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

On Thursday, the Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement, responding to the accusations that Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal had previously leveled against Russia.

"Of course, we are not going to justify ourselves before anyone. Our fundamental position on Syria is well known,"the statement said.

"At the same time, a number of capitals, including Riyadh, unfortunately are not ashamed of employing all sorts of methods and contacts, including by financing and arming international terrorists and extremists,"the statement added, calling for an end to “such actions.”

The Saudi foreign minister accused Russia of being responsible for the crisis in Syria because of providing the Syrian government with military support.

Meanwhile, German Chancellor Angela Merkel warned against supplying arms to the militants in Syria, saying, “The risks [of arming the militants in Syria] would be incalculable.”

The Syria crisis began in March 2011, and many people, including large numbers of soldiers and security personnel, have been killed in the violence.

The Syrian government says that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants are foreign nationals.

Damascus says the West and its regional allies, such as Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, are supporting the militants.

In an interview broadcast on Turkish television in April, Assad said that if the militants take power in Syria, they could destabilize the entire Middle East region for decades.
