Russian govt. introduction of Islamic Studies at university level welcomed at large

The Russian government has introduced a degree program for Islamic Studies across the country and the decision has attracted tremendous praise as some have welcomed the move for better preparing experts on Islam and some say that the move will help curb extremism through spreading peaceful Islamic teachings.

“Students will study for three or five years without going abroad,” Damir Gizatullin, first Deputy Head of the Spiritual Directorate of the Muslims of European Russia and Siberia, said.

Saudi Arabia, Malaysia bolster ties

Malaysia and Saudi Arabia have signed a landmark agreement on science and technology as well as a memorandum of understanding on standardization to further strengthen bilateral ties, according to Malaysian Ambassador Syed Omar Al-Saggaf.

“The first Saudi-Malaysian Joint Committee on Science and Technology agreed to collaborate in energy and life sciences as well as in information and communication technology and multimedia incubation during a meeting last Tuesday,” Al-Saggaf said yesterday.

The participation of 23 Malaysian universities in the four-day third international education conference and exhibition in the Saudi capital is testament to the high-quality education they offer, according to Malaysian Ambassador Syed Omar Al-Saggaf.

He added that this makes them on par, if not better, than other foreign counterparts. At present, quite a number of students from the Kingdom are studying in Malaysia's various universities.

36 University Students Enroll in Germany's 1st Islamic Theology Degree

Germany, home to 4 million Muslims, officially opened its first university department of Islamic theology today, with 36 students enrolled for bachelor's degrees.

The government of Chancellor Angela Merkel faced resistance from conservatives to funding the department at Tuebingen University, the first of four to be opened around the country, but argued that graduates would be the best antidote to self-taught "hate preachers".
