Zainuddin Makhdum – a great Islamic scholar lost in history

Sheikh Zainuddin Makhdum II, author of Tuhfatul Mujahideen and Fathul Mueen, was a heroic personality in history as he had played a major role in achieving social and religious renaissance, especially in the south Indian state of Kerala.

Unfortunately, his life and books have not been studied as they deserved. Tuhfatul Mujahideen is the first ever written history of Kerala or Malabar while Fathul Mueen is a widely accepted textbook on Fiqh or Islamic jurisprudence, especially by the Shafii school of thought and Egypt’s Al-Azhar University.

He was the client of the Banu Tamim, then the Banu Hanifa. His kunya was Abu 'Abdu'r-Rahman.

He listened to Ibn Abi Layla, Hisham ibn 'Urwa, al-A'mash, Sulayman at-Tamimi, Humayd at-Tawil, Yahya ibn Sa'id, Ibn 'Awn, Musa ibn 'Uqba, the two Sufyans, al-Awza'i, Ibn Abi Dhib, Malik, Ma'mar, Shu'ba, and Haywa ibn Shurayh, and he studied with Abu 'Amr ibn al-'Ala', al-Layth and others.

Malik bin Anas, known as Imam Malik, is a prominent name in Islamic history. He was not only a great scholar of Hadith, but also a jurist after whom was founded one of the four Islamic schools of Islamic jurisprudence: the Maliki school.

He was 13 years younger to Imam Abu Hanifa and 103 years elder to Imam Bukhari. He compiled the first compendium of Hadith named Al-Muwatta. He was the most leading personality of his time in Madinah and was called Imam Darul Hijrah due to his remaining in Madinah the majority of his life.
